Welcome to the Vaal Meander Wine Route

The Vaal River Meander Wine Route

12 July to 17 August 2014

As winter approaches, fans of Gauteng’s popular annual Vaal River Meander Wine Route – have already started planning their routes now.

The 6 weeks of weekend wine tasting (12th July to the 17th August 2013) at sixteen different venues has something for everyone – perfect for wine connoisseurs and even those just wanting a pleasant well-priced countryside outing, only 45-minutes from Johannesburg. The Vaal River Meander Wine Route is on every Saturday and Sunday and Public Holiday from midday to 6pm – perfectly positioned to be a charming reprieve from the humdrum of winter.

Gauteng’s oldest Wine Route discerns itself from all the other Wine Routes in South Africa, in that it has a record number of ways in which you can enjoy this winter wine feast. Be it by vintage car, house boat, limousine, luxury cruiser, helicopter, wine route taxi, speedboat, donkey cart, water-taxi, tour-bus or car - this Vaal River Wine Meander has that special something.

Wine lovers might just want to enjoy a casual meander in their own car visiting their choice of the fourteen wine venues or prefer to make use of the many novel transport options.  Perhaps joining up with friends and family and colleagues to make it a memorable group outing.

The sixteen venues are so diverse and offer contrasting experiences as do their wines; with the single common thread of each presenting great South African wines. You might select a venue where you can enjoy sipping wine in front of a roaring fireplace in a cosy pub; or eloquent wine tasting at the classy Riviera on Vaal Hotel &Country Club; or what about enjoying wine in the quirky “Shack” which oozes fun and character; or a Vaal township experience which competes competitively with Soweto; or savouring wine as you cruise aboard a luxurious Cruiser down Millionaire’s Mile; or wine tasting at sunset on a Boat House overlooking the Vaal.

Celebrating its 11th year of existence, this popular winter outing has grown over the years and as a result, is able to keep its excellently priced wine tastings of only R20.00 per venue for tastings.  Each venue hosts between 8 – 25 wines. Being only 45-minutes from Johannesburg, with good highway access - one quickly finds oneself transported into a country environment with a holiday feel.

The 16 venues on and around the Vaal River align themselves with the best South African Wine Estates and for those 6 weeks each represents different Wine Estates which you can meander through, but with optional add on experiences such as enjoying a Cruising Wine Tasting Luncheon aboard a luxurious Cruiser; meandering in a Vintage Car between the different Wine Tasting Venues; make a weekend of wine tasting aboard a House Boat as you throw anchor and moor at the different venues along the Vaal River; spend the weekend at a Lodge or Hotel along the Vaal while you enjoy the wine and food pairing; enjoy special spa treatments packages put on to celebrate this winter treat.

Packages for Corporates are also very popular – where Staff or Clients are treated to well-priced Wine Tasting experiences with or without food pairing – every experience with a distinctive edge.

If you want to organise a corporate or private group outing during these 6 weeks – there are a number of packages to choose from, and personalised packages can be put together for you too - tailored for your individual, corporate or private needs.
